To Dismantle

If it is necessary to dismantle the steering box, proceed as follows;

Remove steering box from vehicle (Refer to STEERING BOX - this section).

To remove the cross shaft seal carefully lever it from the casing.

If the cross shaft bush is to be renewed it may be driven out with a suitable drift, but the new bush must be pressed into position.

Remove drop arm

Noting their nespectrve positions, remove six set-screws and detach the side cover and gasket.
Lift off the worm nut centralising washer.

Fit a new cross shah seal by pressing into position.

Note: The steering box casing has two filler/level plugs so that the same casing may be used in right hand and left hand drive applications. The entry of the worm shaft from either end of the casing dictates its application.

Withdraw the cross shaft from the steering box casing.

Working from the splined end of the worm shaft, pull of the plastic seal cover.

To Reassemble

Fit the closing plate and a new gasket to the lower end of the casing.

Remove the four setscrews and lift off the sea! retaining plate. The sea! housing/bearing cover should then be removed followed by the gaskets and shims.

Instal the worm shaft lower bearing track in the casing. Ensure that it is seated squarely on the closing plate.

Grease the track and fit the ten loose balls.

Hold the worm nut steady and turn the worm shaft until it disengages from the nut. Remove the nut and recover the twenty-four balls.

Grease the thread of the worm nut and fit the twenty-four loose balls.

Withdraw the worm shaft and upper bearing assembly from the steering box casing.

Grease the upper bearing track, invert the worm shaft and fit the track and the remaining ten loose balls.

Remove the upper bearing track from the worm shaft and recover the ten loose balls.

Note: The worm nut contains twenty-four loose balls of smaller diameter than those used in the worm shaft upper and lower bearings.

Holding the worm shaft and upper bearing assembly in such a way as to prevent the loss of the balls, enter the shah part way into the casing. Pass the worm nut through the side opening and position it with the small guide shah facing the side opening.

Working from the lower end of the steering box, remove the four setscrews securing the closing plate. Remove the closing plate arid gasket.

Engage the worm shaft with the nut and turn the shah until the nut is approximately mid-way along the worm thread.

Withdraw the lower bearing outer track and recover the ten loose balls.

Simultaneously enter the worm shaft into the lower bearing and the upper bearing into the casing.
