History
of Renault, Dodge and Karrier Motors, Part 2
Here is a
little info on how the goverment helped chrysler uk
This is volume
II of a three volume report,
on the Government's
decision of 16 December 1975 that Chrysler United Kingdom (CUK)
is to retain certain of its operations in this country in a reorganised
form.
This volume contains a list of witnesses, memoranda, and appendices
and the minutes
of evidence for 14 January 1976 to 7 April 1976.
The Department
of Industry handled the consultation with CUK about its plans for
the future,
and in July 1975 discussions began about the possibility of financial
assistance under the
Industry Act 1972, for a new model programme. In October, the Government
learnt of
Chrysler's plans to withdraw from this country from reports of a
press conference held by the
Chairman of Chrysler Corporation, Mr Riccardo.
There followed
a series of Ministerial and official meetings with representatives
of Chrysler,
the Prime Minister, the Paymaster General, and the Secretary of
State for Industry.
There were
two options open to transfer the complete ownership of CUK to the
Government or to
transfer the majority interest to the Government with Chrysler retaining
a minority interest.
Without a mutually
acceptable solution Chrysler would close operations in this country
within 3 months, from November 1975.
The workforce
of 25,000 would be made redundant and other redundancies would occur
in firms
engaged in the supply and distribution industries, and this would
cost an estimated £150 million
of public funds,
with consequent losses also in the balance of payments.
The plan ultimately
agreed between the Government and the Chrysler Corporation involved
8,000
redundancies, leaving 17,000 workers in the plants to fulfil contracts,
and a potential financial
commitment of £162.5 million over the period up to and including
1979.
Some info on
where the plant might have gone when sold off in 1994 but only references
are to
the renault traffic
This is some
of what i have found, The vehicle in question is the Renault Traffic.
"Renault's
45 percent-owned joint venture with the Sanjiang Group is located,
analysts said. Sanjiang
-Renault Automotive Co. was formed in 1993
to make the Trafic van. Production was suspended because of poor
sales.
The venture sold a total of 4,906 Trafic vans in the past seven
years, according to data from DRI,
a research company."

A joint venture in China that Renault launched in 1993 with Sanjiang,
a Chinese aerospace company, to
produce the Trafic light commercial vehicle was unsuccessful. Production
stopped last year. Now Renault, Europe's third largest automaker,
is ready to try again.

It is into 1993 that the joint company Sanjiang Renault Automotive
Company (SRAC) was created,
following
the industrial agreement with China Sanjiang Groupe.
